Jigsaw Race - Snetterton UK - April 14th 2013

Mark and Joe of Jigsaw racing Services have once given us the opportunity to race other Triumphs in their 20 minute invitation race, this time at Snetterton.

The grid consisted of 14 Triumphs and Triumph derivatives, ranging from David Bailey’s very rapid 2400cc TR4, a Dolomite sprint, a smattering of other TR’s a range of Spitfires, GT6 and Vitesse and Celia Stevens in here 3.5 Litre Warwick.

Practice was damp with dry patches which ensured we were all up to 2 seconds off the pace. David Bailey took pole with Tony Crudgington’s Dolomite 2nd, Phillip Lambe’s TR6 3rd, Clive Gimson’s GT6 4th, My TR5 5th and Celia Stevens Warwick 6th.

The race was a clean fight as they say, with no contact which is always good. David’s TR4 streaked away from the start and I managed to get alongside Phillip as I saw Celia streak ahead out of the corner of my eye taking several places. For a while Celia was in front of Clive whilst the front 3 were steadily pulling away but Clive eventually got past Celia and set off after the others.

That left Celia and I to battle it out, for 5th and 6th. Time and again I was able to get right up close and personal and on a few occasions past her on the corners but on each occasion the significant extra power of the Warwick’s 3.5 litre engine meant that Celia could easily steam past on the straight so that the same scene could be played out at the next corner. Celia peddled the Warwick really well considering it runs on Cross ply tyres and after the race we has a good laugh and big smiles recounting our dicing and agreed that whilst the TR5 might have handled better, there is no substitute for cubes as the Americans say.

David Bailey took the chequered flag and the order up to 6th stayed the same as the starting grid with the exception of Celia and I swapping places; grrr!

Congratulations to David for winning which I believe is his first racing victory in 40 years of competition, so a very special day indeed.

Very special thanks to Jo and Mark for organising and I hope they organise a similar event next year. I will be there if other commitments allow if they do.

TR4 1962 Police Car - NOW SOLD - July 2014

For a Driver or Collector

Many  of you will have followed the detailed refurbishment of the Police car owned by Neil Revington over the past couple of years. You may even have seen it at the TR International or several other shows around the country. Some of the details have been published on this Blog and in our Facebook postings. Well, now you could own this car! Neil has decided to sell the car. It was recently offered for sale at the  "Historics at Brooklands" auction on the 1st June 2013. With the original registration, 4100 HJ as seen on the original Police photos, it was a big draw but - it failed to reach the reserve price. Neil is now offering the car for sale privately.

Thanks For a Great Day - Open Day 2013

A big thank you to all of those who attended our Open Day on Saturday making it the great success it turned out to be. Once again the sun shone on us throughout the day and the temperature rose a few degrees over what it has been for the last few weeks. Those few degrees made all the difference when standing outside admiring all of those wonderful cars. It really did feel like early spring, once the morning chill had been blown away. With some visitors having a round trip of over 300 miles to be with us, an early start was required and I know it wasn’t quite so warm then. It would not surprise me if so many flying jackets and helmets had been in one place since the battle of Britain! But it did warm up and turned out to be a very pleasant day. Sue’s tea and coffee also did the job of getting those early arrivals warmed back up again.

Our "Display stand"
We really did have a great mix of TR’s arrive and all appeared to be in great condition. Our car park was more of a display stand, with all of the cars on show rather than the normal mix on the car park. Cars were parked on both sites, so you really did need to walk around to see them all. With so many cars and TR enthusiasts our visitors were able to swop notes and learn from each others experiences.

Notes and Views being Swapped

TR Roadster in Background and "Prohibtion" in foreground

We had a great looking Triumph Roadster arrive, Ian Pauls rally TR and once again many more TR5’s than you would expect.  We also had a “Hot Rod”/”Funny Car” with a very strong Americana feel to it. Most people did notice the “Tommy Gun” in its rack in the passenger footwell, obviously not a guy to mess with.

Graham Robson and Neil Revington

Our guest presenters made themselves available for questions on their specialist subject throughout the day. Graham Robson teamed up with Neil for some banter and informative background on TR’s. Superpro Europe Polyurethane bush specialists also had a great display and had a steady stream of interested parties throughout the day. Nathan from Evans waterless Coolants also spread the word regarding their great product and also had several discussions with potential customers .

The tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes are finished and now it’s time to start planning for next year. I hope you are able to make it then and join in what is always a great day for us and visitors alike. See you in 2014.
